Roads, schools, and emergency services are vital to our rural communities and it is important that we fund them in a fiscally responsible way.
District 7 Overview
The Mat-Su Borough is roughly the size of West Virginia. District 7 is the largest of the districts, comprising 70% of the entire area. Many of our residents face unique challenges- both physical and financial due to living outside of the Palmer-Wasilla core.
Safe and efficient transportation is especially important in a rural district such as ours. As your representative, I will make sure that our collector and local roads get the proper attention they deserve. I also recognize the economic value of air and water travel and recreational trails to our communities and will give them my support.
I am currently serving on the Joint Assembly/School Board Committee on School Issues. Good schools are vital to the success of our young people. Schools and libraries in our rural area are champions for youth and both provide many opportunities to build community among all area residents. They are worth fighting for and worth funding!
Our emergency responders are dedicated members of our communities and need adequate funding for wages, stations, apparatus and equipment. I am a strong supporter of the Firewise Program.
We need increased Trooper presence in Meadow Lakes and our northern communities to reduce crime rates. We need to support programs that address the underlying causes of crime- homeless youth and drug abuse. We must invest in afterschool activities for young people, and encourage Neighborhood Watch programs.
I applaud the recycling efforts of our local communities. I am a member of the Mat-Su Fish and Wildlife Commission. Healthy salmon runs contribute so much to our lives and livelihoods, and I will continue to work hard to protect and enchance them.
The communities in District 7 are widespread and diverse. One size does not fit all, and it is important that our residents are informed about the local issues and are given the opportunity to be involved in the decision making process at the Borough level. That’s why I regularly attend community meetings and respond to my constituents.
